Probably will discontinue this for awhile

I noticed that the trend of this blog seems to be more and more my animosity against western medicine, and there's nothing much that can really be done about that (besides, Natural News, which I'm always linking here, covers so much of that subject so much better than I could.)

All that to say is, I'll keep this open, and might periodically post, but for the most part I'm signing off on this particular blog.

What's really in the food? The A to Z of the food industry's most evil ingredients

Most of these are old news for me, but still worth noting. What's sad is when a food additive is scientifically determined to be dangerous to ingest and yet its still allowed anyhow.

Diet soda in 'fat' shocker - Expands girth, hikes blood sugar

Diet soda makes you fat and boosts your blood sugar, the New York Post reports.  And when I drink it, it dries out my throat and gives me a headache, hence why I don't drink it.

7 surprising things you're not supposed to know about sunscreen and sunlight exposure

Interesting report about sunscreens at Natural News.  I've never understood the logic of lathering the skin with chemicals, when it's just as easy to hit the pool or beach during a time of day when the sun's rays aren't as strong.  Even with sunscreen, its very uncomfortable to be out in the blazing noon sun, so I skip the lotions and just go later in the afternoon for a swim.

WHO panel warns that cell phone use may cause cancer

WHO suggests a potential link to cell phones and cancer.  No surprise with this... I've wondered about the radiation risk of holding a cell to one's head for hours at a time and a correlation to cancer.

Doctor: Vasectomies Spike by 50 Percent During March Madness

Foxnews reports about how vasectomies rise in March due to, of all things, basketball on television, so that men who get this surgery can then sit motionless and recover following the surgery. Foxnews didn't cover much about long-term health effect risks of this surgery, which is really a shame. The article basically read like an endorsement of the surgery without any long-term complications referenced in the article, like are found here.

Of course, I don't read Foxnews for serious news other than sensational headlines and the occasional article that misses the mainstream media, but Fox is NOT the place to go for valid health news.

Skippy Peanut Butter Recalled in 16 States Due to Possible Salmonella

A story about Skippy recall.

I haven't eaten Skippy in ages since I started avoided hydrogenated oils in foods. I think the "natural" version is a move in a better direction, but salt is still added, when it doesn't need to be.

Vaccines Did Not Save Us – Two Centuries of Official Statistics

Per site http://childhealthsafety.wordpress.com:

This is the data the drug industry do not want you to see. Here 2 centuries of UK, USA and Australian official death statistics show conclusively and scientifically modern medicine is not responsible for and played little part in substantially improved life expectancy and survival from disease in western economies.

The main advances in combating disease over 200 years have been better food and clean drinking water.  Improved sanitation, less overcrowded and better living conditions also contribute. This is also borne out in published peer reviewed research.

Kraft Italian Vinaigrette with Extra Virgin Olive Oil - A step in the right direction

I've been trying out Kraft's new Italian Vinaigrette which, in addition to being made with extra virgin olive oil, is also nice in that a lot of the usual junk (high fructose corn syrup and the varieties of MSG/yeast extract) aren't in this, and yet it remains a very tasty and flavorful (and fairly affordable) dressing.  The ingredient list is a lot better than some of the other shelf dressings - from the site, they are:

Ingredients: WATER, VINEGAR, EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, SUGAR, CANOLA OIL, SALT, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF GARLIC*, RED BELL PEPPERS*, CARROTS*, SPICE, XANTHAN GUM, ONIONS*, LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE GREEN ONIONS*, POTASSIUM SORBATE AND CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA PRESERVATIVES. *DRIED.

I could do without the preservatives, but all the same, this is better than some of the other MSG-rich dressings out there.

It does remind me, though, of something I read in a book called Wild Fermentation, in which the author Ellix Katz mentioned that it doesn't make sense to buy salad dressing at the store, but instead that its extremely easy to just make at home (and his book included a couple recipes for dressings, as I recall.)  And yes, homemade is best, but there are times when I do like the convenience of having a pre-mixed dressing, preferably without junk, so this works for me.

Rumford Baking Powder

I've been using Rumford baking powder recently for baking, primarily because it's one of the few brands I've been able to find that is aluminum free.  I'm always glad to support products that advertise the junk that is NOT included in them.

On a related note, I thought this Natural News article was interesting, about Vaccines and the link to aluminum allergies.

Food, Inc.

A fascinating look at where food comes, with some fairly brutal scenes from some Tyson chicken plants.  Much good information presented, including the dangers to health and to the environment.  What was most inspiring to me was seeing the life of the organic farmer that was presented.  I don't remember his name, but his farm was an excellent display of how organic, natural farming SHOULD be done instead.

There is a lot of good information presented, but so much more on the subject could have been said.  I rented this from the library, but its also currently streamable on netflix.

Country Hen Eggs

The local HEB just recently started carrying Country Hen eggs, and I've been impressed with these (if for no other reason than at how YELLOW the yolks are of these eggs.)  The cost is a little steep, but I think it's worth it for the nutritional benefit of these eggs.  The hens are cage free, they get sun, they are fed certified organic, and the eggs as a result are high in omega-3s.  After watching the horrific Food, Inc, I'm always glad to find healthier chickens that aren't brutally clustered in windowless coops.
